Alaskan Malamutes

                      What you should know !

And what to look for !

Hopefully this will give you an idea of what to expect with your puppy, or what to look for when visiting Breeders, and/or what to expect to see on the paperwork.

KC - Kennel Club. This is the Governing Body for Dogs in the UK. To have a dog that is KC registered, does NOT guarantee quality or health and the KC do not Vet Breeders to ensure they are reputable. It is up to YOU to Vet a breeder and find out if they are reputable.

Pedigree - Simply a Family Tree that shows your dog's Parents, Grandparents, Grt Grandparents etc. Even Crossbreeds can have Pedigrees, they are just family Trees.

KC Registration - A Registration Certificate that comes from the Kennel Club that states that your Pup's parents etc are also registered with the Kennel Club. KC Registration allows you to enter Shows and other activities. If you do NOT have a KC registered dog, you will be very restricted in the activities your dog can do.

BRS (Breed Record Supplement) - This is a Publication from the Kennel Club, openly available to buy for only £5.00 per Quarter, and lists Litters, Parents, Breeders, Health Tests etc, which is from KC Records.

Hip Score - This is a procedure by where they 'score' a dogs' Hips for Hip Dysplasia (HD) and 'grade' it on the severity. Malamutes should have a score of less than 13 to be bred from. A Dog that has been tested will have this information ON their KC Registration, and have it's own Certificate. ASK the breeder to see BOTH the Certificate AND the KC Reg of the parent to make sure it is on there.

Eye Test - This is a test to detect Hereditary Cataract (HC) and dogs should be tested CLEAR Annually. Again there should be a separate Certificate AND it should be stamped on the parents' KC Reg. Ask to see BOTH.

Endorsement - These are Breeding and Export restrictions, which means a dog cannot be bred from until it meets the Breeders' requirements and proven himself (Age, Quality & Health testing) before the Restrictions will be lifted. Export restrictions are for those who are maybe moving abroad, but the breeder would need to know before the restriction is lifted.

Kennel Club Name - The Specific 'Given' Kennel Name given to a dog which will be displayed on the KC Reg.

Affix - A Breeders' Specific Name which only they can hold, which should be registered with the Kennel Club, for which the Breeder will have a Certificate stating so. It will often be the first name of a pup, before the 'given' name.

Kennel Licence - A Licence is needed if you breed Over a certain amount of dogs. It does NOT guarantee the quality, health, reputation of a dog or breeder, but simply states that the premises are in a certain condition, for the amount of dogs they have. A Licence bears no indication that you are buying from a reputable breeder.

Specialist - A Specialist is one that has shown in a Professional manner and Judged for some time, including Judging their own Breed and are known in the showing world, and has also possibly bred their own lines for some time. They will usually be members of a Breed Club too and be named on several Judging Lists, so these are things you can also ask about, if someone claims to be a Specialist.

I hope this has been helpful to you
