A Mal isn't the breed for everyone. Some call them stubborn and strong willed. I prefer to see them as Independently minded with the intelligence to need a reason to fulfil a request !
However, many breeders will not tell you the bad points, or what to expect, and because of this, too many end up in rescues or are sold through Free Ads papers online, which no dog should be subject to !
You need to ask yourself the following :
Can you cope with the copious amounts of fur they 'Blow' twice a year ?
Are you willing to Devote time and patience to training, socialising and learning about the breed ?
Are you prepared for a large, strong dog that has a high prey drive and are predisposed to dominant behaviours ?
Are you willing to 'adapt' your nicely manacured garden and make it Mal Proof ?
Are you prepared to give a dog enough exercise and mental stimulation to satisfy it's needs ?
Are you willing to accept that you will need to teach your Mal that you are Pack Leader to prevent dominance issues arising ?
Are you prepared to accept that many Mals often don't get on with smaller animals due to their prey drive ?
Are you prepared to KEEP a Mal for the average lifespan of 8-12 years ?
Are you prepared to go 'back' to your breeder for advice when you need it ?
Malamutes are not a 'One Man' dog, and not your average Fireside breed !
These are some of the points you will need to consider before taking on a Mal. Every breed has ups and downs and Mals are no different.
Are you willing & capable of giving as much to a Mal, as he will give to you ?
There are many, many wonderful points of a Mal too, but you obviously know them already, or you wouldn't be here
PLEASE consider these things and
DO NOT buy a Malamute on a whim ........ !
see the 'Which Breeder ?' Page to find out why !
